The sea brings its own unique challenges. Getting the opportunity to learn and gather the skills, knowledge, leadership and experience, can be slow and at time's a frustrating journey. Roger can offer you a Mentoring paddler development programme, which is either short (3 months), medium (6 months) or long term (over a year), enabling you to gain a clearer focus, direction and better use of your limited time. All of this, in a world class destination of Anglesey and the North Wales coastline.
Whether you're working towards increasing your skills and abilities, becoming a sea kayak guide, gaining British Canoeing (BC) performance and leadership qualifications, or your wanting to become a more confident and skilled paddler, without the awards - for example, learning to surf a sea kayak or a future expedition. This programme is then for you.
One such example was a team of three individuals, with little previous sea kayaking experience, who approach Roger for coaching and mentoring and he only had 4 months to work with them. Their planned journey was from England to Finland, begining with crossing the English Channel. Erin and Alice finished the 3 month journey and their podcast can be heard here. Best to clarify this before we go any further! Mentoring is a learning relationship between two people based on listening, sharing and challenging. The Mentor is there to provide an independent view and remain outside of the situation, avoiding providing straightforward answers and taking decisions for the Mentee. It is more about providing direction rather than answers.
It can help to have someone with greater experience to assist you to make decisions relating to your direction, to help you achieve and even exceed your own goals. A coaching mentor could be part of this process giving you clarity and guidance, enabling you to progress, faster or more effectively, in order to maximise your true potential in achieving all you wish to accomplish.
This is a fantastic opportunity for you to gain a valuable opportunity working with an experienced and highly qualified British Canoeing (BC) Level 5 Coach and a 5 star leader trainer and assessor. You will benefit from a personalised action and skills development plan, created with you. One model Roger will use is below and allows a broader focus on the skills and behaviours or the approach needed for achieving a specific skill or task:
Paddler development allows mentees to progress as far as they see fit over a period of time that suits an existing career, various commitments and/or a family life and your pocket! There is no additional financial cost for this programme.
It's your programme after all. A drive and desire to push personal boundaries, whether they be physiological, psychological or both. A personal commitment beyond our time on the water, with an active role in your self development.
Mentoring is largely a self-managed process and the responsibility for maintaining and developing individual relationship lies with the mentee concerned.
Regular contact with the Mentor is vital to gain and maintain the momentum of progression and development. In many cases having your own sea kayak allows for greater momentum, as between seeing Roger you will often be given focused tasks to work on. It is the Mentees’ responsibility to seek progression and development and to be honest about their desired direction. This may change through the programme.
Personal skills development ~ feedback into a workable personalised action and skills development plan, created and owned by you and based around what you want to do; when do you want to begin; how do you do it; what is needed to do it; how long its likely to take and how will success be measured?.

"There are a number of wonderful things about Roger. He has a very light touch in his coaching, and he's always smiling and encouraging you to relax into the enjoyment of the day"
"And I'm probably learning more from his mentoring now, as my paddling horizons expand, than ever before. I can't count how many questions I've asked... and he's answered. Roger has the knack of making that suggestion that radically changes your thinking and moves your paddling on in leaps and bounds."
"I've just completed a two day 4* Sea kayak training course with Roger. Having been coached by Roger in the past, I choose to do this course with Roger because I knew I would get a great deal from the course. My expectations were certainly well and truly met"
