What does sea kayaking offer you?

Sea kayaking is the opportunity to go on an adventure and explore places from a unique vantage point.

What have you achieved, to date through paddling with Roger and Coastal Spirit?

Roger Chandler trained up a group of 3 of us (sea kayaking novices) for our 3 month sea kayaking expedition from England to Finland in the summer of 2012.  We could not have possibly done the trip without the training and expertise of Roger in the run up to and throughout the course of our trip.

Why Coastal Spirit?

At the University of Warwick I took up white water kayaking and went on a sea kayaking trip one summer which I greatly enjoyed.  In my final year two friends and I decided we wanted to finish University with something big and developed the idea of going on a sea kayaking expedition.  This then formed into a plan of kayaking from England to Finland.

At this stage we looked up sea kayaking coaches as we realised this was not something we would be able to do without training and help.  We had the good fortune to come across Coastal Spirit, subsequently going to see Roger with our somewhat ambitious trip proposal.

We could not have been more fortunate, as Roger went above and beyond to support the education and training necessary for our expedition.  Roger taught us all the necessities for the trip including theoretical work on tidal planning and practical coaching on our paddling technique. He also passed on a huge amount of sea kayaking knowledge on trip preparation in terms of key equipment, necessary supplies and food.

Not only did Roger support us in the run up to our expedition, he also accompanied us on the first stage across the channel, I’m not sure we would have even made it to France without Roger!  Unfortunately we couldn’t take Roger with us the whole way, but he continued to support us via text and email throughout the trip and offered advice when we needed it.

Thanks to Coastal Spirit, Erin and Mark and I had the courage to take on a challenge of a life-time in setting out to kayak from England to Finland.  It took us 3 months but we did make it to Finland thanks to help and support from Roger and Coastal Spirit.

I would strongly recommend Coastal Spirit for anyone looking to embark on an expedition, as the training and support we received from Roger was outstanding.

What are you looking forward to and where would you most like to paddle next and why?

Short term I’m looking forward to an annual open canoeing trip on the Medway, which will be nice and relaxed.  More long-term I’m looking forward to doing some white water paddling in Scotland in October and the French Alps next summer.  I am also keen to get back on the sea in the future .....

Courses and expeditions
Isle of Harris Exploration
The Isle of Harris is part of Lewis and is rich in natural beauty, sandy beaches and stunning wildlife. The golden eagle and white tailed sea eagles are highly likely to be seen most days.

We will be based at a campsite and if the weather is super settled we can decide if we do an overnight wild camp. During the last two years we've at least managed two nights wild camping.

You need to be an experienced moderate water paddler who can manage Beaufort winds f4/5 and occasionally stronger. You're also happy paddling a loaded sea kayak for 20km

We meet up on the afternoon of the 30th of April and leave on the morning of the 6th of May 2027. Zoe Robinson and Roger will be delivering the course. Both are advanced coaches and advanced sea kayak leaders.

Outer Hebrides by Tall Ship ... Intention St Kilda!
The Outer Hebrides are an outstanding and beautiful island chain. Sometimes called the Western Isles. Our intention weather permitting is to sail the 60NM to St Kilda, set in the deep Atlantic. 'Lady of Avenel' our mother ship and floating home - this is a lifetime experience with two adventures in one!

With Lori, Zoe and Roger as your advanced leaders. We meet on the afternoon of the 6th of June and load our sea kayaks onto 'Lady of Avenel' and kit into our cabins. You need to arrive on the 4th of June. This allows for any disruption with the CalMac ferry and a rest day, after a long drive). We arrive back in Castlebay on the 12th June.

You need to book and arrange your accommodation for the night of the 4/5th June and the 12th June.

There are two hotels, a bunkhouse in Castlebay and a short drive to Wavecrest campsite, which is where Lori, Zoe and Roger will be van camping.

Simon Turnbull

"I've just completed a two day 4* Sea kayak training course with Roger. Having been coached by Roger in the past, I choose to do this course with Roger because I knew I would get a great deal from the course. My expectations were certainly well and truly met"

Stella King

"There are a number of wonderful things about Roger. He has a very light touch in his coaching, and he's always smiling and encouraging you to relax into the enjoyment of the day"

Tavi Murray

"And I'm probably learning more from his mentoring now, as my paddling horizons expand, than ever before. I can't count how many questions I've asked... and he's answered. Roger has the knack of making that suggestion that radically changes your thinking and moves your paddling on in leaps and bounds."

Thanks for a great weekend.  We were really impressed with the way you ran the course and that it felt 'tailored' just for us.  We both really enjoyed ourselves and Chris has definitely got the bug.  Many thanks.
