Our intention is the remote, exposed and distant isolated archipelago of St Kilda, in the North Atlantic Ocean, which is a dream trip for many paddlers. Steeped in history, with the highest sea cliffs in Britain, an abundance of caves and arches rich in marine life and thousands of sea birds - home to the UK's largest colony of puffins and the world's largest colony of gannets! This is a 14-hour sail/motor from Barra, although during this journey a paddle in a new location may be possible. The specific plan will be dictated by the current and future weather forecast.
If the weather is not suitable for St Kilda, we know you will still be moved by the azure waters, golden sandy beaches, stunning wildlife and epic locations the Outer Hebrides can offer.
Join Coastal Spirit on this memorable, fully supported and guided adventure aboard the 102ft Brigantine tall ship, 'Lady of Avenel'.

What's included in the price?
- Six nights accommodation aboard 'Lady of Avenel' in twin cabins
- Fully catered with excellent meals in the comfortable salon
- Supported by three experienced and highly qualified advanced leaders and coaches
- Ratio: max 3:10
Join Coastal Spirit for a week exploring the Outer Hebrides and 'maybe' the islands of St Kilda, the UK’s only dual UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our intention is to sail from the island of Barra on the Outer Hebrides to St Kilda and anchor in Village Bay. With the ship in support, we will explore the breathtaking islands for two or three days, allowing us to explore the main island of Hirta.

The Lady of Avenel, our ‘mothership’ for the week, is skippered by Stefan or Charles, with a first and second mate (one of which is also the cook!) Both Charles and Stefan have been sailing throughout the Outer Hebrides and the coast and islands of Scotland for many years. The 'Lady of Avenel' offers a comfortable base to set out from each day.
Accommodation on board consists of twin berth cabins with bedding provided, two hot showers (one at either end of the boat) and flush toilets.
The unsettled weather of the Atlantic means getting to St Kilda can be challenging and, on some occasions, not possible, but if that is the case, we are confident you will have a memorable and rewarding time despite the weather. Having experienced and highly qualified guides increases the chances of making the most of the conditions and having an enjoyable time. Being on board 'Lady of Avenel' is a wonderful experience.
At suitable times you are welcome to be involved in crewing and experience an insight into tall ship sailing. From steering and following a course, working the ropes while under supervision as well as wearing a full body harness and the opportunity of climbing high into the rigging or walking out on the 'bow sprit'. Being involved certainly adds an enjoyable aspect to your adventure.
Is it suitable for me?
Your sea kayaking experience level should be such that you can enjoy paddling in swell and windy conditions Beaufort F4/5 (11 - 21knots); this is more important than the ability to cover large distances.
Ideally you will have paddled with Coastal Spirit before, if not we can arrange a phone call chat. You are also self-sufficient in terms of kayak and paddling equipment. At this present time, we are unable to take international clients, unless you have your sea kayak and are self-sufficient.
What's not included?
- Transport to and from Oban.
- Ferry to and from the island of Barra and Castlebay - you need to arrive on Friday the 4th of June due to possible problems with the CalMac ferry. Its also good to have a break after the previous days driving.
- Accommodation and food before and after our adventure. 4/5th and 12th June accommodation needs to be arranged - two hotels, and a hostel are in Castlebay and a short drive takes you to a campsite, called Wavecrest
- Alcohol - bring a bottle of your preferred tipple - some times theres an honesty bar onboard the ship.
- Personal travel, accident and holiday insurance - essential.
- Any unforeseen extra expenses
- Towel for showers
How to get to Castlebay on Barra?
There is a regular CalMac ferry from Oban to Castlebay on Barra, and the crossing is under five hours. If the weather allows, it's worth staying on deck for as long as you can, as sightings of Dolphins, Minke Whales, and Golden Eagles, are possible. Its worth arriving early on the island so you can decompress and to allow for any challenges with the CalMac ferry!
You can, with pre-arrangement with CalMac, trolly your sea kayak onto the ferry with your paddle kit inside your sea kayak. The great advantage of this is you travel as a foot passenger, your kayak goes free, and it feels like your adventure has begun! There are long-term car parks in Oban where cars can be left.
If you plan to bring your vehicle onto the island, it makes good sense to travel share where possible unless you have plans to travel on and stay longer.
Book your crossing for Friday the 4th June, returning on 13th June, unless you want to arrive earlier or stay on longer!
Where do we meet and other arrangements?
We will meet on the island of Barra, Castlebay on Sunday the 6th, in the afternoon and start to transfer sea kayaks and paddle kit onto 'Lady of Avenel' which will be mored on the pontoon at the local marina.
The following Saturday the 12th, we will arrive back in Castlebay
How to book your place?
We need eight people as a minimum to confirm this booking.
