BC Coastal Sea Kayak Award endorses your judgment, decision making and expertise and requires a good understanding of paddling on the sea.
Join us on a Moderate Water Sea Kayaking course to work on dynamic performance skills, self and assisted rescues. To develop the above, incident management, and peer leadership, consider a British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader training course.
Before your course, you may find the self-profiling radar model below, helpful to complete and then after the course to guide your goal setting and action plan.
During the course, each morning over a coffee, there will be an opportunity to discuss plans, consider goals, reflect on the previous day, ask questions and learn from each other. This is to support you and your development so you get more out of the course. It's worth keeping in mind, you the paddler need to own and drive the process to seek progression, ask questions and set goals. Coastal Spirit can give you feedback in a group context to support your action planning.
In some situations booking a Bespoke private day or two where you will gain more detailed feedback and with each day set at your pace may be more suitable for you. A Bespoke course can be really useful as you skills, confidence and ability develop, bringing you closer to assessment. And also if there is a minimum of two of you, consider a Bespoke ongoing training and assessment.
If you choose to work towards an assessment, you need to be confident planning and undertaking journeys on the sea in winds up to, including Beaufort force 4, 1-meter beach surf and tides up to 2 Knots. Your confidence should be based upon both proficiency in skills and a broad appreciation of surroundings and environmental context. The award is a sound basis for independently building experience and expertise. You need to provide a log book of all your paddles, and you will benefit from completing the British Canoeing (BC) Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning course.
Enjoy the journey of learning and progression, and become a better paddler as you do. At any point, before, during and after your course, if you have any questions, Coastal Spirit is here to support you towards achieving your goals. If you choose to go for assessment, do your best to relax, and whatever the result, enjoy the process of another day of learning on the water!

Use the self profiling model below to further guide and assist your understanding and development. It is useful to complete the model a few times during a year, as your skills develop.
Great day with Sally working on boat handling, reading the water and its ok to feel uncomfortable.
Cemaes to Bull Bay was perfect, with wind with tide and then wind against by the afternoon so we got a few waves and a nice push along the coast.
It was nice to see Rob again too. Thanks for helping with the shutle!
Great team and super time on our Shetland Adventure with the tall ship Lady of Avenel Sailing. Otters, Puffins, Orca and MuckleFlugga!
Thanks to Zoe Robinson and Hamish Leslie for their support and inputs.

Surf & tide race course, with a good blend of dynamic water over the three days. With Rhoscolyn and the Beacon, Cemaes to Bull Bay via Middle Mouse and the Swellies. We had some super rock features on the north coast on Friday and just the right amount of swell. My highlight was this interesting water spout - it was so much fun!
It was a pleasure paddling with you all and thanks to Craig Young for his support.

P&H Sea Kayaks "I've just completed a two day 4* Sea kayak training course with Roger. Having been coached by Roger in the past, I choose to do this course with Roger because I knew I would get a great deal from the course. My expectations were certainly well and truly met"
"There are a number of wonderful things about Roger. He has a very light touch in his coaching, and he's always smiling and encouraging you to relax into the enjoyment of the day"
"And I'm probably learning more from his mentoring now, as my paddling horizons expand, than ever before. I can't count how many questions I've asked... and he's answered. Roger has the knack of making that suggestion that radically changes your thinking and moves your paddling on in leaps and bounds."
