Assessing Provider Competence

The new Paddlesport instructor award goes live in January 2019. SUPs will be part of the syllabus and therefore providers need to have enough experience of SUPs to deliver on the course and also show they are personally competent. There are various options for them to demonstrate their competence of which one is an assessment of their skills and knowledge by a BC SUP DSM provider.

Roger is a BC SUP DSM provider, so is able to assess a providers competence. Contact for more information.

Coastal Navigation & Tidal Planning (British Canoeing qualification)

About Roger and SUP!

Roger properly began SUP, back in March 2016.  Partly because he enjoys learning and new challenges.  The fresh higher perspective surprised him, there was less gear and on those blue sky days, wearing only shorts and a rash vest provided a sense of freedom.  Paddleboarding was also a good work out for the core and legs.

His playground ended up being the Swellie's on the Menai Straits (the area between Britainia and Menai Bridge) which was easy to access and provided areas of confused water and current.  On other windier days he always had the sweat water of Llyn Padarn, inland, as this short film shows.  This allowed Roger to develop his skills, take many swims and ultimately improve his balance!

However It wasn't long until he started to see what he could do, from a distance perspective and exploring new coastal, off shore and qualification based challenges.  Below are a few of these with  a couple of links to articles and short films:

  • October 2016:  The 3 Lakes Challenge - The longest natural lakes in Wales, England and Scotland, in 3 days, solo, self supported and the 2nd person to have completed this.  More info is here.
  • November 2016: Puffin Island, Anglesey - his first coastal and island adventure, solo and sea kayak supported.
  • December 2016: North Devon, Combe Martin to Lynmouth and Englands highest cliffs - solo and self supported.
  • May 2017: Bull Bay to the Brick works and back, North coast Anglesey - Solo and self supported.
  • June 2017:  The Stacks, Holy Island, Anglesey - Solo and kayak supported.

  • February 2018:  Rhoscolyn to Trearddur Bay and short film, with Adam .  The Skerries, of NW Anglesey, Solo and self supported.  Probably the first to land and go out and back.

"And I'm probably learning more from his mentoring now, as my paddling horizons expand, than ever before. I can't count how many questions I've asked... and he's answered. Roger has the knack of making that suggestion that radically changes your thinking and moves your paddling on in leaps and bounds."

Simon Turnbull

"I've just completed a two day 4* Sea kayak training course with Roger. Having been coached by Roger in the past, I choose to do this course with Roger because I knew I would get a great deal from the course. My expectations were certainly well and truly met"

Stella King

"There are a number of wonderful things about Roger. He has a very light touch in his coaching, and he's always smiling and encouraging you to relax into the enjoyment of the day"

We both really enjoyed the week - learnt a lot and had a lot of fun... spent the last few weeks raving about it to whoever'll listen and would love to do some more kayaking ... Thanks for being such a fabulous guide and instructor!
