Deb's Helsdon

What is your job and briefly what does it involve?

I'm an IT Infrastructure Engineer. It involves constantly learning new technologies, and tap tap tapping my fingers on a keyboard lots.

What 3 words would you use to describe yourself?

 Energetic, Adventurous, Shy (just kidding)

What is your favorite & best stuff:

Sports: I love doing anything active in the outdoors. I regularly enjoy running, cycling, SUP (when i can fit it in between my sea kayaking).

Interests: I love animals and nature, in particular I love seahorses, dragonflies, orangutans and bumblebees (I have rescued many a bumblebee lost at sea)

Music: I like all sorts of music from classical to cheesy pop, depending on my mood. I also enjoy playing the flute (apologies to my neighbours...)

Movies: To be honest i cant watch movies very often unless i'm absolutely shattered as i struggle to sit down for very long...

Food: I love cooking, and even better I love to eat almost any food. I think I eat my food faster than anyone else I've ever met!

What does sea kayaking offer you?

Sea Kayaking takes me out into a big open environment which is so far away from the overpopulated city I live in. I feel like I'm part of another world that belongs to the crabs, seals, fish and dolphins. I feel privileged to be able to move around in this amazing environment. I can play in the surf or the races, or I can go on journeys/adventures, and sleep on wild beaches where no one else goes.

What have you achieved, to date through paddling with Coastal Spirit?

I have become more confident, and been able to start to paddling in much more challenging environments without needing baby-sitting. Its helped me start to bridge the gap between 4* and 5* level paddling.

Why Coastal Spirit?

Mentoring with CS appeals to me as it has helped me identify my weaknesses and strengths and put together a long term personal development plan.

What are you looking forward to and where would you most like to paddle next and why?

I'd like to start to plan a challenging expedition somewhere new and exciting where I can push my skills/stamina. I'm open to suggestions!

I'm also tempted to treat myself to an expedition somewhere warm with sea temperatures that wont give me an ice-cream-headache if you fall in :). Now wouldn't that be nice????

Feb 2016 Debs and 2 friends arranged their own self supported exped in Mexico, Baja and saw whales, dolphins and jumping ray's!!   oh, and they went swimming too  ;)

"There are a number of wonderful things about Roger. He has a very light touch in his coaching, and he's always smiling and encouraging you to relax into the enjoyment of the day"

Simon Turnbull

"I've just completed a two day 4* Sea kayak training course with Roger. Having been coached by Roger in the past, I choose to do this course with Roger because I knew I would get a great deal from the course. My expectations were certainly well and truly met"

Tavi Murray

"And I'm probably learning more from his mentoring now, as my paddling horizons expand, than ever before. I can't count how many questions I've asked... and he's answered. Roger has the knack of making that suggestion that radically changes your thinking and moves your paddling on in leaps and bounds."

Many thanks for the two splendid days of instruction which not only proved very useful but also proved very enjoyable.  We would not hesitate to recommend you to friends seeking instruction in the Anglesey area.
