Advanced (5 Star) Sea Kayak Leader Assessment

North Wales - £180

During the two days we will cover as many aspects of the Advanced (5*) Syllabus as time and conditions allow. This will be done in advanced tidal waters, in winds of force 5 and tidal streams over 3 knots. You will be assessed leading a group of fellow paddlers of about 4* standard. For a definitive list of all that you may be asked to do please go to the links below to both the 5* syllabus and assessor notes.

About 2-3 weeks before the assessment course an open book theory paper, will be sent to you, so you can research and gather your answers.

The assessment may begin on Friday night with an open water navigation paper, and the following two days you will be assessed on your ability and decision making to lead a group in advanced tidal waters and dynamic weather conditions, incident management and personal skills. There will be a night navigation paddle on Saturday.

Please ensure that you have logged at least the minimum pre-assessment experience, as outlined the relevant BC notes for guidance and ensure you leave enough time to apply for the Leadership Registration (LR). This form is valid for 1 year from application and a registered stamped photocopy needs to be forwarded to me before booking on this assessment.

Information and the LR form can be found here.

"There are a number of wonderful things about Roger. He has a very light touch in his coaching, and he's always smiling and encouraging you to relax into the enjoyment of the day"

Simon Turnbull

"I've just completed a two day 4* Sea kayak training course with Roger. Having been coached by Roger in the past, I choose to do this course with Roger because I knew I would get a great deal from the course. My expectations were certainly well and truly met"

Tavi Murray

"And I'm probably learning more from his mentoring now, as my paddling horizons expand, than ever before. I can't count how many questions I've asked... and he's answered. Roger has the knack of making that suggestion that radically changes your thinking and moves your paddling on in leaps and bounds."

We both really enjoyed the week - learnt a lot and had a lot of fun... spent the last few weeks raving about it to whoever'll listen and would love to do some more kayaking ... Thanks for being such a fabulous guide and instructor!
