This expedition is 'One BIG Adventure' (1BG), that takes in the rugged coastlines of the West and North of Scotland with the relative shelter of The Great Glen and over 800km, for the full loop. This expedition covers some of the most spectacular and exposed stretches of the UK coastline, including Cape Wrath, the infamous Pentland Firth and the most westerly point of mainland UK, Ardnamurchan Point and many glorious beaches along the way. In 2015 the team was successful in completing this, epic adventure in 28 days and in 2017 Fort William to Inverness a 'salty' version of the RoB at over 710km and another 28 days.

If you want to fast track your experience, knowledge, skills and increase confidence. Cut down your learning time and speed up the process, while undertaking a significant journey, this programme is for you.
This is an opportunity to paddle a significant part of the British coastline, which is truly spectacular and drammatic ... you can be assured of a memorable and exciting adventure.
Pre-course experience: You are a solid and confident Intermediate paddler, who has a good effective forward paddling style, top end sea kayak leader skills (4 star), who is physically and mentally fit, capable of currently paddling a minimum of 30km per day, experienced winds up to force 4/5 on the open sea and from different directions, can paddle in 3 knots of current and with a good rough water roll. Comfortable wild camping from your kayak, completed a number of overnight wild camping expeditions (ten) before, with a cheerful personality and a commitment to your own development.
The aim of the 6 days training, (3 separate blocks or 2 days and then 4 days) is to provide an intensive opportunity and identify areas to work on prior to the expedition. Plus an opportunity to meet and to begin to work together as a team. You will walk away with an action plan, which will aim to provide you with a focus and direction, in the months prior to the expedition. At agreed points, prior to the expedition Roger will email each individual, to discuss further their action plan. The more you do before 1BG, the more you will enjoy and be able to soak up this unique experience.
An overall goal is for each individual to be comfortable paddling 40-50 km efficiently with a loaded boat before starting the Roof of Britain. This way there is less chance of injury and greater chance of enjoyment.
Camps will mainly be wild ones, unless public sites are an obvious choice or seen as essential!! Along the way we are sure to see a variety and abundance of sea birds various mammals such as grey seals, porpoises, otters, eagles and we may even see dolphins or whales. During The One BIG Adventure around Wales 2011 we saw 2 pods of dolphins. While with Mull 2012 we saw 4 golden eagles, 5 white tailed sea eagles and an otter almost every day. A pod of dolphins and golden eagles in 2013, with the Isle of Skye. While with the RoB in 2015 a pod of Orca, a Minke whale and 3 pods of dolphins, plus many various sea birds. In 2017 we saw 4 pods of Dolphins (common, risso and bottlenose), many different sea birds otters and an active submarine!
If you already hold the sea kayak leader (4*) or the advanced sea kayak leader (5*) award training, imagine what you would gain and how this would assist you towards gaining further experience and confidence, upon your return. Or just soak up the experience of this sea kayaking adventure, for what it will be.
Further information - Coastal Spirit has teamed up with Fidra, to hunt for Nurdles! Fidra is a charity based in East Lothian, Scotland. They seek to find ways to engage local concerns over current and emerging environmental issues, and use this to contribute to wider dialogue at national and international levels. So whats a Nurdle!? In brief they are small raw pellets of plastic, that have escaped and are spread accross the UK. We want to see what the impact is around the Scottish coastline and map it out. In 2017 we found none during 18 beaches and a 2 minute hunt. This information was then forwarded to FEDRA and OS grid referenced. What will 2018 bring?

Around Wales 2011, Magazine Article - Coastal Spirit decided to run the first 'BIG Adventure' with a rapid development programme and a one month long paddle around Wales. The plan was to use the canals and waterways on the inland section and then along the coastline, to rejoin the dots back to the start point. Di Lee, one of the course participants wrote an article about her adventure in two parts, which can be read below. Enjoy!

"There are a number of wonderful things about Roger. He has a very light touch in his coaching, and he's always smiling and encouraging you to relax into the enjoyment of the day"
"I've just completed a two day 4* Sea kayak training course with Roger. Having been coached by Roger in the past, I choose to do this course with Roger because I knew I would get a great deal from the course. My expectations were certainly well and truly met"
"And I'm probably learning more from his mentoring now, as my paddling horizons expand, than ever before. I can't count how many questions I've asked... and he's answered. Roger has the knack of making that suggestion that radically changes your thinking and moves your paddling on in leaps and bounds."
